Thanksgiving 2010 - a visit from Grammy & Papa!

In November my parents came to Michigan to visit us for Thanksgiving. We had so much fun with them!

The kids were completely spoiled by Grammy and Papa!   They were read to and cuddled galore...

They spent lots of fun quality time together...
cooking...

playing with toys...

 looking at Ben's Kindergarten artwork...

Dad, Mom, Eliza and I went to the Henry Ford Museum one day and saw all the big trains, classic cars, and lots lots more...

Eliza and Papa checking out a very huge combine...

For Family Home Evening, we colored turkeys together. It was fun!

Grammy and Papa had some sweet artistic talent! A few days after they left, Ben colored the other side of their turkeys, copying the design his grandparents made. I thought that was cute. :)

This is Papa's:                                This is Ben's copy on the backside of his:

This is Ben's (on left) reproduction of Grammy's turkey (on right)...

Sammy was a good boy while we all colored.  He is such a sweetie.

One afternoon, my Dad started to get sleepy while he was reading to Eliza and so she let him take a nap... She tucked him in with blankets, and then started giving him her stuffed animals... From there I guess she thought he might want to snuggle with Ben's sword (see it in his hand?) and have Sam's blue bumbo seat on top of him too (??)  When Jed saw her piling toys on top of her sleeping Papa, he took a few pictures. So hilarious!

We had so much fun having them visit. We love you, Mom and Dad!

Sam's Army Crawl

The first clip is of a Saturday morning when Ben didn't have to go to Kindergarten, and when Jed was off work. We all had a very fun morning enjoying being together!
The second clip is of Sammy army crawling. He can get across the entire room if he sees something he really wants.
The third clip is of Benjamin reading to us. I found a series of chapter books at the library and took Book 1 home, and he loved it! I need to go get a bunch more for him.
(Ben is 5, Eliza is 2 1/2, and Sam is 7/8 months old.)

Like mother like daughter?

Me, two years old, I think.  Eliza, two and a half years old.

it's Halloween!

We had a great Halloween! On Friday, I took Eliza and Sam to see Benjamin's school costume parade. And you won't believe this, but we caught sight of SPIDERMAN while we were there!

And he actually waved to us!

Samuel missed out on that excitement.  He lazily gazed out at us all from his cozy and warm little spot.
After the parade, we went to Ben's classroom party.

On Friday night we all went to our ward's Trunk-or-Treat party.  Sam was a little dragon. Daddy was a.... a dragon tamer.

Mommy was a witch, and Eliza was a ballerina.

And now we are making ourselves sick with candy. Eliza ought to be on her deathbed if over consumption of candy really made a kid sick. She can open the wrappers herself and is having a heyday! Today at lunch she opened up a big tootsie roll and I intercepted her saying she needed to eat lunch first. She wanted to put the tootsie roll next to her plate while she ate. At the end of her meal, I went to the counter to put butter on a roll that came out of the toaster and when I turned around, this is what I found:
A piece of tootsie roll on each portion of roll. And she was eating it like that. As if the tootsie roll was a glob of peanut butter on her bread or something. Too funny! This pretty much sums up how we have been eating the past three days!!!!

Carving Pumpkins!

We carved pumpkins as a family on Tuesday night. Jed is such a tease! He loved grossing the kids out with all his antics. :) Actually, Ben is pretending to eat the pumpkin guts with Jed. :)

Eliza can't peel her eyes away from Daddy for even a second!

Jed carved pumpkins to order. Ben wanted a scary pumpkin. This one looks sad. Close enough.  :)

Eliza wanted a happy pumpkin. Jed carved a great jack-o-lantern for her, and it was happy. But I only have a picture of sad Eliza next to the sad pumpkin.  She was crying about not being able to have my matches. It was bedtime. I accidentally set her down by the wrong jack-o-lantern for a picture. I didn't attempt getting another picture of her next to the right pumpkin. Besides, this was just too appropriate! :)

Here is my pumpkin. He got bonked over. :)

Eliza's Halloween Playschool Party

My friends and I do a 'playschool' with our 2 and 3 years olds once a week. This week playschool was at my house and we had a Halloween Party.  Entertaining seven 2 and 3-year olds for two hours is hard work, I'll tell ya! :) As you can see, I only got five of them in the picture. I'll take what I can get. :)  Eliza was a ballerina, but we didn't have all of her costume yet, so we'll take more pictures at the trunk-or-treat this weekend.
Aren't they cute?!

Hayride activity

Every Fall we go to Jed's work party at Fun Acres. Since we have a lot of friends that are also residents/medical students at the hospital, this is always a very fun outing!
The boys were rolling each other down the hill in this tube. They had a blast, which was surprising since they were really getting bumped about! After every time I kept expecting someone to come out in tears, but none of the kids ever did!

Jed and Ben are standing on a huge, tall tractor tire. I could have posted the picture zoomed out so you can see how big it was, but then you would miss out on Ben's "this is freaking me out!" face!

Ben and Eliza rode the cow train many times. A big hit!

And of course we went on the spooky dark hayride through the Haunted Woods.  Very fun!

Jed & Ben's outing

Jed took Ben to a miniature golf course last Saturday because Ben had stayed on 'orange' every day that week at Kindergarten. The other day I said, "Wow, Ben! You have been staying on orange every day! You must be getting so good at holding still during Brain Rest!" He said, "No, not really." Then he told me that he wiggles around sometimes but Mrs. McMillan doesn't make him flip a card. (Mrs. McMillan is his real Kindergarten teacher who just started teaching the class; up until now he's had a substitute while Mrs. McMillan recovered from surgery.) Then I found out that Mrs. McMillan reads the kids from a chapter book during Brain Rest every day. WOW! How awesome is that?! I am so thankful that she does that. It makes life a lot easier for little Benjamin to get to 'rest' while listening to his teacher reading them a funny book about the adventures of Junie B. Jones!
Today he came home and recited to me a cute little song they did in class, "I'm being eaten by a boa constrictor!" and also, "5 little frogs were sitting on a log, on the edge of a pool, getting ready for school..." He had the whole thing memorized and did the actions for me and everything. It makes me happy that he is doing fun things in class.
Anyway, back to the point - Jed took Ben on a Father & Sons date on Saturday before he had to head back to work. They had such a great time!  Jed took some video with his ipod. He only recorded two holes out of the 18, and Benjamin happened to get a hole-in-one on one of the holes that Jed video taped!   (I love how Ben calls, "Ding Dong!" as his ball boinks against things on his hole-in-one shot.) They sure had fun! And they came home with an extra Wendy's shake for Eliza and I to share. :)

Soccer!

Benjamin is our all-star soccer player!  :)  He plays soccer every Friday, and all the kids on his team are also his friends from church; there are about 8 of them on the team. And my good friend, Ruth, who is also all the kids' Primary President, is Coach Ruth on Fridays.  :)  Going to soccer is fun for all the parents, too. We're all good friends, so we have a blast hanging out for an hour every weekend. Last Friday we even planned a fire-pit party afterward, and everyone stayed after to roast smores together. :)

One moment, looking like a pro!

The next moment, crash & tumble!!  :)

The way this league works is he is part of a team of 4 & 5 year olds, and his coach helps them practice a new skill for 30 minutes and then scrimmage against themselves the next 30 minutes. I really like this setup.

He enjoys playing soccer, and I have a feeling he will stick with this sport. But who knows? :)

Every day is memorable around here

Usually I don’t have that much to say about our everyday life, but lately all kinds of funny little things have been happening.

First of all, I have to record about how my kids morphed into teenagers overnight…

In September, Benjamin was telling us after school some days that he had to “flip a card” at school, which means he got in trouble. They have a system where each child has a set of cards; they start at orange and if they misbehave (or have trouble listening or whatever it might be) they flip their card to green. Second time, it goes to yellow (and a note is sent home), third time it goes to red, then black (and they have to go to the principal's office).  Anyway, he told me had to flip a card, and then he described how he got into a little scuffle with another boy and had to go to the principal's office. Great, so he had to go to the principal’s office after, what, only ten days of being in school? That night we were talking while he was in bed and he said, “Well, going to green isn’t a big deal. Red, that’s a big deal. Yellow, shjeeeh! (and a shake of the head, like ‘that’s real bad!’) Black – principal’s office! (in a “that’s so bad!!” voice) …… but… The principal’s office wasn’t really that scary… I thought it would be huge… but it was just like (and then motioning with his arms ‘yea long’)…” So not only did he get sent to the principal’s office, but it also didn’t intimidate him at all!

A couple weeks ago, Benjamin started telling me that he had been getting chocolate milk for lunch. He described to me how he saw his friend Zachary get a chocolate milk, so he went and got one too. He is funny when he tells me stories like this. He includes little details like how he hands the lunch mom a ticket that says “Benjamin Walker” on it and then he picks up a chocolate milk and on his way back to his table he gets a straw. Well, this story confused me because I hadn’t paid for hot lunches, and so I wasn’t sure how he was getting a chocolate milk. These stories suspiciously coincided with the fact that he had been coming home with nearly untouched lunches for a few days. I put two and two together pretty quick and decided that he must be relishing that chocolate milk, with the straw, for 40 minutes every day during lunch period.
I wrote a note to his teacher asking about it, and she called me to tell me that he had been ordering a milk for a few days and it was 50 cents each time, but from now on if I wanted him to take his water bottle to lunch, she would help him do that. So, bottom line: Benjamin saw something he wanted and just “charged his account”.  When it worked the first time, score!- he kept doing it!  It made me chuckle – my five year old figured this trick out?!
I felt guilty depriving him of this pleasure and indulgence, but… I knew that he was just sipping his chocolate milk and not having any time to eat anything else, so this was for the better!

Two weeks ago, Benjamin had to flip to a ‘yellow’ card two days in a row. That was his first time going past green. So Jed and I talked to him and we decided that if he could go all week – Monday through Friday – on orange or green, then he could order a chocolate milk on Friday at lunch. If he went all week on orange then Jed would take him to McDonalds for an icecream cone. Wow, did we see a difference last week! Monday and Tuesday he stayed on orange! Wednesday he flipped to green, which was a bummer for the icecream, but we told him that he could try again next week and that he could still get the chocolate milk. And sure enough, Friday rolled around and he got to order his chocolate milk. Good for him! Every day this week I’ve put a snack baggy in his lunch with a note “Remember to stay on orange! Obey everything Mrs. H. says!” and one orange M&M inside.  Maybe this little mid-day reminder helps because “brain rest” is right after lunch, and this is when he has the most trouble. They have to stay still and quiet for 30 minutes, laying down on beach towels in the classroom. Benjamin hasn’t taken naps for years and really isn’t tired at all, so he starts to get fidgety and this is when he usually gets his card flipped.  He complains about brain rest, saying he likes everything about kindergarten except for that, and even told me yesterday, “I h-word brain rest!!” (This week he coined ‘h-word’ which means hate – a naughty word in our house! And ‘s-word’ is stupid, and ‘d-word’ is  dumb. He doesn’t say those often, he just started this week really, but when he has, it surprises me to hear him say “d-word” and “h-word” as if he’s thinking of swear words or something!! :))  Anyway, with those incentives, he has been doing better at brainrest. And the ‘getting in trouble’ that we are talking about is wiggling around during rest time or waving his arms when he should be paying attention. Not rebellious behavior or anything, but it makes me chuckle that I have to be concerned about his ‘school behavior’ at such a young age. :)
I took this picture today. Ben was reading A Bugs Life to Eliza on the couch.

As for our two year old, last month there was a day that I thought she must be in her terrible ‘teens’…
Eliza goes to a ‘playschool’ with a few other 2 to 3 year olds every Wednesday morning. My friends and I just rotate houses for who hosts playschool, and we do a very loose schedule of learning and fun activities for the kids. Well, the first Wednesday when I picked her up from my friend’s house she did not want to come home. I finally had to carry her to the car, hold her down and buckle her in so that we could leave. She was not too happy with me! At first she was crying and mad at me. Then she became quiet.
I thought she was over it, so I asked her in a happy voice, “So, Eliza, did you have fun?! What did you do today at Sister Gough’s house?!”
She said, “Noffing.”
I said, “Nothing? You didn’t do anything?”
“Noffing.”
“Well, did you get to color?”
“Noffing!”
To try to get some info out of her, I kept asking questions enthusiastically: “Who else was there? Was Jacy there?”
“Noffing!!  Don’t talk to me!”
“Hmm… Did you get a snack?! Was it yummy?”
“Noffing!  Don’t talk to me!”
At this point, I recognized the humor of this moment – Was she seriously telling me not to talk to her? Giving me no information about her day as a punishment to me? For heaven’s sake, she is TWO YEARS OLD!  I asked a few more happy questions but to no avail. She would only say “Don’t talk to me!!” So funny!
Picture taken today, when we were playing "Pretty Pretty Princess" game together.

Secondly, big news!  Eliza wears panties!
I started potty training Eliza a week ago Monday. Over the weekend we had already picked out new panties with Disney princesses and fairies (she loves Tinkerbell). We had also picked out Tinkerbell fairy fruit snacks. And on Monday morning we put on panties and ceremoniously threw away the rest of her diapers!  The book Zoe's Potty (and the chart and stickers that came along with it) that my mom gave Eliza was a huge hit!
It's been one week and she hasn't had a peepee accident since Wednesday, her third day of potty training. She is doing so great!
The first couple of days, when she would have an accident, she would say, “I’m peeing on them!” meaning she was peeing on the princesses on her panties. Then she started to break the news to me by simply running up to me and saying, “But you still love me!”
I would say, “Eliza, did you go peepee in your panties?”
She would only repeat enthusiastically, “But you still love me!” The way she would say it was so funny - with an enthusiastic smile, but also expectant – like she was hoping for a good response from me. Such a funny girl. How could I argue with that sweetness?
“Yes, of course I still love you!  But we need to go peepee in the potty, okay?”
“Okay, mama. I will!”
She's my little helper. While I was getting Sam his food,
she sat next to him with her arm around him, talking to him. So cute.

And third, last of all, I have to record some darling little things the kids have done lately.
Last Friday I was reading to Eliza in the afternoon when I got very sleepy. It was during that time of day that I would normally lay her down for a nap, but I had to leave soon to drop her and Sam off at a friends house so that I could attend Ben’s “parent hour” at Kindergarten. So when I got super tired, I told her that I was going to rest on the couch. She said okay, and tucked Sam’s blanky under my chin and gave me her dolly to cuddle with. Then she left to go get another dolly for me. For the next few minutes, she kept coming up to me and giving me tender kisses and re-tucking the blanket under my chin. I kept pulling it down a little when she would leave, and every time she checked on me she would pull it up again. Then, about 10 minutes later I woke up (from a very light sleep) and she was sitting in the room playing quietly with toys. I thought it was so cute how instead of me putting her down for a nap that day, she put me down for a nap! :)
She has been mothering me all weekend, calling me ‘sweetie’ and pretending that she is my mommy.
One day last week I went in after her nap and found her sitting up and cradling and singing to her baby doll, which she had wrapped up in a pink blanky.

Yesterday Jed had to work a shift at the hospital, so it was just me and the kids at church. In the morning Benjamin got ready for church before I got out of bed! I seriously love it when he gets all ready for the day without any nagging from me. Consequently, he got to play on The Friend Magazine website while I got the rest of us ready for church.
After we got home we had lunch, Eliza went down for a nap, I fed Sam, and then Benjamin and I read a few chapters from his Old Testament Stories book. At that point, I got super sleepy. Yes, I know, I have a sleeping disorder that only shows itself when I am trying to read to my children! So anyway, after reading for about a half hour, I just fell over on the couch and said, “Ben, I’m just going to take a little nap.” I fully 100% expected him to protest, but instead he was totally supportive. He said, “Okay mom, just go to sleep.” And then he started to quietly and comfortingly sing, “Rock-a-bye, don’t you cry…”  (He sings that when we are playing pretend; if he wants me to pretend to sleep he will sing that and I will pretend to sleep while we are playing make believe.) I thought it was absolutely darling that he was singing that to me for real! I peeked at him, and saw that he was making his way toward the kitchen, and when he saw me peeking at him, he said, “Close your eyes, Mom. Just go to sleep.” And then he restarted the song for me. A minute later, I heard a few clinking noises, so I peeked again and he had gone into the kitchen and opened the dishwasher and was putting away all the clean utensils. Then after a moment, I heard a kitchen chair being dragged over to the dishwasher, and even though I didn’t open my eyes that time, I heard him start singing “rock-a-bye…” again, because he thought the chair may have disturbed my rest. Well, I blissfully rested to the sounds of clicking plates and cups, until I heard Eliza calling me. I jumped up (a habit I’ve formed this week since we are potty training) and went up the stairs, saying, “Ben, I’m just getting Eliza.” He answered, “Okay, Mom. And then you can go back to sleep, okay?” Upstairs I helped Eliza out of her crib, helped her go potty, tidied up her room, got Sam up, and then the three of us went downstairs together. When I got downstairs, Ben said, “Mom, just go back to sleep. You can go back to sleep, Mom.”  As I laid Sam down with some toys on a blanket, I said, “Well, I’d like to see you…”  He then said, “Mom, do you want to see what I’ve been doing?” I walked over to him and he was just finishing up the last items in the dishwasher. He was beaming, knowing that he had served me. I gave him a big hug and told him how happy I felt, and what a sweet boy he was.
He said, “I’m doing what the boy from The Friend did for his mommy! I’m serving you! Do you feel good, Mom?” I was so proud of him, and so touched by his sweet nature.  He is such a sweet heart. He had internalized a story he had read and watched on The Friend website and had acted it out himself. I thought that was so sweet.

an update ~ September 2010

These three little munchkins are so much fun! Here's a quick update on each of them...

Benjamin still loves Kindergarten. It's been 3 weeks and our morning routine is pretty dependable, and I love it! Benjamin wakes up on his own, gets out of bed, gets dressed (I lay his clothes out on the ground at bedtime), makes his bed, goes to the bathroom, brushes his teeth, and says his morning prayers. All without even waking me up or having to be harped on, or having to rush out the door. It's blissful. He likes to get all ready before I see him so that he can 'surprise' me, and I think that's just great!  At some point I usually wake up (~7:15/7:30am) and go downstairs to get out his lunch from the fridge and start breakfast.  If he gets all ready for school early enough (~7:45am) then he gets to choose any breakfast he wants, such as waffles, pancakes, or crepes. Then we can enjoy our morning and breakfast before we leave to go to the bus stop at 8:10am.
(This is a picture of him showing off his nicely made bed, one of the first times he made it all by himself.
He learned how to make his bed all alone the week before school started.)

So, that's our routine. However, he's getting more and more independent! The other morning I woke up at 7:50am (which is later than usual) and since it was quiet I thought we had both slept in. But when I checked his room, his bed was made and  his clothes were gone, so I knew he must be downstairs. I went downstairs and this is what he looked like.  He had found his lunch in the fridge and put it in his backpack, his shoes were on and tied (a little loose since he's still getting the hang of it), and his jacket was zipped up. Totally ready for school! What a good boy!

But after this morning, I'm thinking this might be getting out of hand!  I woke up to the sound of the front door opening; I looked at the clock and it was 7:51am. I went downstairs to greet Benjamin, and he was in the front lawn (with shoes, jacket, and backpack on) peering down the street to where the bus stop is. I called to him, "Benjamin, what are you doing?"  Well, he was completely ready for school and was seeing if it was time to go to the bus stop (if anyone was waiting there yet).  Um, wait a minute. Hold up! That is one step too far!  He's such a crazy boy! haha! I said, "Have you had breakfast?"  "No", so I guess he forgot about that part. I said, "Sweetie, I like to walk you to the bus stop. I don't want you to leave without me!"  My goodness, I encouraged him to get ready on his own and now I've created a monster!  :)
As you can tell, he likes to be able to do grownup things on his own. There was once when his bus dropped the kids off a few minutes early, before any parents were at the bus stop yet. I was in the front yard getting ready to head over and I watched him cross the street with some other kids and run to our house alone, and he thought that was pretty cool. Now when I pick him up lately, he acts happy to see me but also disappointed that he couldn't walk home all by himself, and sometimes he says, "Mom, I want to walk home alone!"  But I just tell him that I like to pick him up because I'm so excited to see him and then he doesn't mind anymore.  :)   What a funny boy!
(This is a picture of us at his Kindergarten orientation on September 7.)

Eliza is such a darling! She loves princesses and makeup and baby dolls. She is a sweet girly girl!  :)
When I get up in the morning I go get her from her crib because although she never calls for me, by 7:30ish she's always awake. She just likes hanging out in her crib, sucking on her binki and sitting or laying with one of her stuffed animals and a blanky. If she's been up for awhile (in the morning or after a nap) she will start talking or singing to herself, but she almost never calls for me.
Anyway, after getting up, we go downstairs and she eats breakfast while I walk Ben to his bus stop and wait for his bus. She is such a no-rush kind of girl. She doesn't mind leisurely eating her breakfast while we're gone. (She takes every meal at a leisurely pace, slow but steady. :) ) Once I get back, our day together begins!  She is so easy. She's still at that stage where she enjoys playing with toys and busily doing her own thing while I work nearby (tidying up, doing dishes, feeding Sam, organizing closets, etc).  Yesterday after breakfast she put everything on the floor up onto the couch, calling it her 'car'.  It was so funny when I finished with the dishes and looked over at her nestled behind about 1,000 toys on the couch. There were babies, blankets, toys, diapers, a folding chair, a dish towel, a book... I have no idea how she tucked herself into that seat! I got quite the kick out of it! And I pulled out the vacuum to take advantage of that impeccably clean floor! :)

She found her popper toy, which we call her 'vacuum' and got right to work with me, vacuuming alongside of me. :)  I have to mention that she is wearing her much beloved Tinkerbell pajamas. She feels like such a princess wearing them.  :)  It's so cute. She also has a pair of Tinkerbell flip-flops, which she loves as well.

The other day, after doing some puzzles together, I asked her if she wanted to paint her nails with me. She was so excited! She said, "Sure, sure!" I told her she needed to get dressed first, so she ran to her room and said she wanted to get dressed all by herself (Ben is rubbing off on her!). I got out an outfit for her to put on and then walked to my room as she closed her door. Just then I remembered some little task I needed to do downstairs, so I went down there to do it while I waited for her to get dressed. As I was downstairs I heard her open her room and run into my bedroom and shout, "I'm all dressed!" I heard her stop as she realized I wasn't in there and then run to my bathroom to look for me. I called up to her, "Eliza, I'm downstairs!" Suddenly I heard her crying at the top of the stairs. I ran up to her and held her and said, "What's wrong?"  Through her sweet little tears I caught the words, "--going to paint our nails!--" and I realized that she thought I wasn't going to do it with her anymore. It broke my heart! She is such a sweetie!  I assured her that we were still going to paint our nails together, and we went into my bathroom to get our nail polish. She got really excited again, and had such a good time painting nails together!  It was seriously so cute. She was very proud of her pink nails all day. At dinner time she showed me how some of her nail polish was coming off and I said, "oh, yeah, it's chipped" and now when she says "my nail polish is chipped" it sounds so funny coming from a little two year old!
Here she is showing her pretty pink nails. :)

Samuel is the sweetest, best natured baby ever. Seriously, he is such a doll!  He is now 6 months old and weighed 15 lbs 12 oz at his doctor's appointment this month (which is ~25th percentile). After I get back from taking Ben to the bus stop I go get him from his bed and bring him downstairs to feed him, around 8:30am. I think he probably wakes up around 7:45am, but he just sucks his thumb and hangs out in his bed until I come get him. Which is a huge blessing since it's so much easier to get Ben out the door first and then come back and start to feed him.
He loves to roll onto his tummy, probably because he feels like he can look around better that way. :)  He is interested in any toy or box or paper that may be lying on the floor, and if it's close enough he will manage to get to it (rolling, stretching, and squirming his way over) and grab it. He's at a fun stage where he is starting to enjoy toys and be able to handle them with his little hands. It's so darling how he gets very excited about a toy!

A few weeks ago I was putting Ben and Eliza to bed while Jed worked on a presentation in his study. I asked Jed to hold Sam while I finished up with Ben and Eliza so that I could feed him and put him to bed after I was done with the older two. Jed got out the swing for him and set him next to his desk. (He has only been in the swing like once ever; he just doesn't need it - he is so content being on a blanket on the floor during the day.) Well, while I was putting them to bed, Sam fell asleep in the swing like this! Jed took his picture. What a little sweetheart! That swing put this tired little boy right to sleep!

He is such a joy in our home. He is a sweet little angel. Last night he was fussing a bit while I was cleaning up and Jed remarked, "I think that is the first time I've heard him cry in a week" and it wasn't even a real cry. It just goes to show that he is honestly the sweetest little baby in the world.
When I go to him while he is laying on the ground, he gets so happy and excited that he starts to squirm around. It's like he can't contain all that happiness!  I just love to lay by him and tickle him and play with him during the day. He is so darling!
